Ten Years. 3 Top Ten Albums, two of which went to Number 1. A double platinum debut containing songs that made them the most played band on Radio One in 2006, when Radio One played guitar bands. 5 consecutive sold out nights at Brixton Academy, the only band to ever do that. Number 1 singles in Peru, sold out stadiums across the globe, jumping the fence at Heathrow to film a legendary video, upsetting the critics with an album cover that has been copied from here to Australia and back again, Hard-Fi’s first ten years have been the stuff that makes being in a band seem like the best idea in the world.

There a few more appealing tales to the romantically inclined music fan than that of Hard-Fi. Back in Staines contemplating the wreckage of his band Contempo, Richard Archer regroups with local lads and forms Hard-Fi. Recording wherever possible; back rooms of pubs, the abandoned cab office that will become their Cherry Lips studio to this day, the band piece together what will become ‘Stars Of CCTV’ with the help of former Contempo A & R Warren Clarke and producer Wolsey White, whose BMW becomes their playback facility. A CDR copy of ‘Cash Machine’ dropped into Xfm puts the phone lines into meltdown after one play and the ten year story begins with the thing that sustains it throughout; the power and support of the great British public.

To celebrate a decade of Hard-Fi comes ‘Best Of 2004-2014’, a compilation of not just the hits; the ‘Cash Machine’, ‘Hard To Beat’ and Suburban Knights’ that comprise a large part of the soundtrack to the streets of urban Britain for that period but also the fan and band favourites found across ‘Stars Of CCTV’, ‘Once Upon A Time In The West’ and ‘Killer Sounds’, the band’s three studio albums. With Hard-Fi in the studio at the present time, a tantalising glimpse of what comes next is also present in the shape of ‘Move Over’, a suitably engaged piece of social commentary that comes clothed in a Rhodes wobble; an barbed iron lyrical fist in the smoothest of velvet gloves. As Richard himself says, the journey so far has been quite a ride.

‘This really shouldn’t have happened, a debut made on a laptop in a nicotine stained broom cupboard – a musical style at the time so out of step with what we were being told to like…. Despite a naive optimism that something would one day come good in our musical quest I just couldn’t imagine anyone actually saying ‘yes’ let alone the journey which we’ve on for unbelievably 10 years. There’s been ups and downs, we met and played with our musical heroes, played some incredible shows, saw the world. Some things we nailed, some we fucked up but if you want REAL DIY punk spirit – this is it.’
- RICHARD ARCHER
