Jay James (also known Jay James Picton is a Welsh Recording Artist, Songwriter & Broadcaster from Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire.
Jay burst onto the music scene in the summer of 2012 having written & featured on the song “Fly” by Cinematic. Labelled as a ‘Summer Anthem’ and championed by Radio 1 DJ’s Annie Mac & Trevor Nelson the song was released on Black Butter Records (home to Rudimental, Clean Bandit & Jess Glyne).
His debut single ‘Long may they Roll’ hit the No2 spot in the Radio 1 RnB charts and featured remixes by Naughty boy, Gorgon City’s Matt ‘Rack N Ruin’ and Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran). The debut Album ‘Play it by Heart’ released on
Decca Records, Universal featured collaborations with the likes of John Legend, ’The Roots’ (James Poyser), super producer Malay (Sam Smith, Frank Ocean) and Soul Legend Booker T. Jones.
The foundations of a bright future in Soul music were furthered with a feature on ‘Broken Heart’ alongside Booker T Jones (Grammy Lifetime Award Achiever) the song taken from the Album ‘Sound The Alarm’ which also featured the likes of Anthony Hamilton, Gary Clarke Jnr and Estelle ended up being the lead single and ‘Broken Heart’ went on to become Booker’s biggest UK radio hit since ‘Green Onions’ (Booker T & The MG’s) and hit the No1 spot on BBC Radio 2’s A-List and remained in the Top 20 UK Airplay charts for a twelve weeks.
In 2014 with fewer platforms to showcase emerging talent and with the landscape of the music Industry rapidly evolving towards ‘popular reality culture’, Jay who had recently become a new dad decided to place his fate on a chance. Later that year it paid off with Jay becoming wider and more commercially known through his heavily featured involvement in TV Show, the X Factor UK (Season 11).
Simon Cowell mentored Jay throughout the season, describing him as ‘Incredible & a genius’, on completion of the series Cowell also revealed that Jay had been his ’favourite to win’ and urged him to step away from the public gaze and return to focusing on his original music. During his time on the show Jay also made history when his live performance/version of The Proclaimers hit ‘500 Miles’ which charted at No7 on iTunes and became the first ever X Factor Live performance to do so. The exposure gained on the show placed Jay firmly in the spotlight leading to tours of the biggest arenas and music venues in the UK & Ireland, it lead to work with royalty, not to mention some of the biggest most prestige brands & companies lining up to book the experienced, charming and multi-talented creative. Jay was also featured at number 10 in Heat & FHM’s Magazine’s Annual ‘Top 100 Hottest Men in the World’ Poll, beating the likes of Hollywood A-listers & sports stars. Despite the lights and temptations of the ‘celebrity World’ with his mentors advice firmly in mind Jay decided to take some time to write, reflect and build a more longer term career plan.
During this time Jay built on a passion for broadcasting, with natural flare and a huge opportunity to develop his talents with the British Forces Broadcasting Service (Forces Network). The former Royal Navy Warfare Specialist who had respectfully served ten years suddenly found himself successfully pitching & co-presenting a show which, now in it’s second successful year is known as the Flagship Music & Entertainment Show on the Forces Radio, BFBS Worldwide. With a dedicated audience of armed forces personnel, their families and forces fans, the ‘Big Show’ airs to 27 Countries around the Globe every Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday from 4-7pm UKT.
Working alongside a tight broadcasting schedule, from playing music out on air to regularly writing and creating, Jay caught the ears of RnB Legend, Alexander O’Neal who after hearing new music invited him to join his own UK Tour as a special guest throughout 2018.
