‘Turn Back The Clock’ was a massive hit for Johnny Hates Jazz and was released in 1988, catapulting them to global fame. It was a number one in the UK and several other territories. The album has sold over four million copies and contains era-defining singles like ‘Shattered Dreams’, ‘I Don’t Want To Be A Hero’, the title track and ‘Heart Of Gold’.
The line-up of Johnny Hates Jazz featured songwriter Clark Datchler [vocals, keyboards, guitar], Mike Nocito [bass, programming) and Calvin Hayes [keyboards, drums]. ‘Turn Back The Cock’ was itself however a brief moment in time; after the huge success of the debut album, the band fell apart, with Clark leaving. Though there was a second album, not featuring Clark, it is for the power and purity of their incredible debut that the band are remembered.
Clark Datchler said of the release: “The ‘Turn Back The Clock’ album represents a remarkable moment in our lives, one where we managed to connect with many people around the world through the power of music. That in itself was no mean feat, but when it came to recording the album acoustically 30 years later, I was reminded of why I think these songs have endured. They were written and recorded not simply with success in mind, but also because we wanted them to live beyond the era in which they were conceived – just as the music we had grown up listening to had done. Now that ‘Shattered Dreams’ has been played over 3.5 million times and counting on US radio alone, I’d like to think we succeeded.”
Thirty years on from the release of a pure Pop diamond, this new edition of ‘Turn Back The Clock’ is a great way to reconnect with a set of incredible songs that still enjoy airplay the world over. And, with some UK live dates confirmed too, what better moment could there be to ‘Turn Back The Clock’ and enjoy those great memories once more.
