About

KAYE – born Charlene Kaye in Honolulu, Hawaii – spent her childhood all over the globe, relocating to Singapore, Hong Kong, Arizona and Michigan all before she turned 18. Growing up in the suburbs of Phoenix, she became a full-fledged music obsessive, playing classical piano and teaching herself punk songs on her mother’s nylon string guitar.

Upon moving to New York after earning an English degree at University of Michigan, Kaye began playing bass and guitar in a few groups, including a gig as Slash in an all-girl Guns N’ Roses tribute band. It found her in a top hat and aviators, joyfully sharpening her shredding chops. Soon after, a mutual friend connected her to Ellis Ludwig-Leone, another NY-based musician who was looking for a lead female vocalist for his indie rock collective, San Fermin.

What began as a single European tour led to touring full-time as San Fermin’s frontwoman for the next two years, playing major festivals like Lollapalooza, Firefly, and Austin City Limits; sharing the stage with St. Vincent and Arctic Monkeys; and performing on a sold-out North American tour with alt-J. Additionally, she has performed on national network television with the band, while her live performances have received rave reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and The Wall Street Journal.

On her laptop in the tour van, she began to sow the seeds for her own music, sending demos back and forth with good friend and producer Elliot Jacobson (Verité). The result is her debut self-titled EP, which will be released on August 19, 2016.

The EP is a palette of polarities, reflecting the taste of a musician who was once equally as obsessed with Destiny’s Child as she was with Nine Inch Nails. “Honey” is a Sleigh Bells-like stomper of a track featuring scuzzy guitars and doo-wop harmonies, while “UUU” (pronounced “You”) employs grunge bass flecked with the skittery percussion of 80s-era Janet Jackson. Standout opener “Armies” features KAYE’s acrobatic voice detailing manipulative emotional warfare as cause of a crumbling relationship, and “Porcelain” is a glam rock romp that touches on KAYE’s experience as an Asian American woman in the music industry.

KAYE EP comes out August 19.
