What’s your favorite vinyl movie moment? From the more farcical scenes (dominating zombies with vinyl-flinging ninja moves) to the positively heart-wrenching (an opera giving hope to an entire concentration camp), vinyl has an unshakable place in our lives and, subsequently, in the films we love. Watch these 10 awesome vinyl movie clips and then add your own in the comments!
1. “High Fidelity” – Record Store Scene
This film has endless fodder for top vinyl moments, but this one caught our attention because it features not one but two PledgeMusic acts. No more griping about a lack of new music from Echo & the Bunnymen and Stiff Little Fingers, however, because now you can get both!
2. “Almost Famous” – America Scene
“One day, you’ll be cool …. Look under your bed. It’ll set you free.”
3. “Moonrise Kingdom” – Record Player Scene
“Where’s your sister?”
“I don’t know, but she borrowed my record player for 10 days without asking.”
4. “Shaun of the Dead” – Record Toss Scene
When blood-thirsty zombies attack your house, and you’re told your only shot is to remove the head or destroy the brain, vinyl just may be your best option. “Now, some of these are limited- …. that was the original pressing!”
5. “It’s a Wonderful Life” – Honeymoon Scene
Skip to 1:55. Not only can the new Mrs. George Bailey whip together a tropical honeymoon getaway in a matter of minutes, the resourceful young bride can also roast two chickens at once on a record player-propelled spit. Can your wife do that?
6. “Life is Beautiful” – “Belle Nuit” Opera Scene
In this brilliant film soaked with heartbreak punctuated by the hope of one determined father, this moment is a true testament to the incredible power of music to spread hope even in the midst of the most dire circumstances. Jacques Offenbach’s final opera brings memories of a better time to a woman who has had literally everything taken from her. (The only clip we could find isn’t in English and doesn’t have English subtitles, but even if you haven’t seen this incredible film, the scene speaks for itself.)
7. “The Shawshank Redemption” – Opera Scene
Much like the moving scene in “Life is Beautiful,” this “Shawshank” clip finds Andy obstinately playing the “Sull’aria” duet from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” to restore a taste of humanity to those in a state prison. “It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man at Shawshank felt free.”
8. “Lilo & Stitch” – Record Player Scene
“Nani. Nani! Look …”
9. “The Mechanic” – Ending Scene
Play the forbidden record player at your own risk ….
10. “Equilibrium” – Ludwig Van Beethoven Clip
Even in a futuristic society in which all creative expression is forcefully prohibited and citizens inject themselves to keep from feeling emotions, enforcement officer John Preston (Christian Bale) can’t keep from being moved by classical greatness.
