Warner Music is delighted to reissue – for the first time ever – Art of Noise’s third album, In No Sense? Nonsense!, widely regarded as their most adventurous, most experimental work.

Set for release on 02 November 2018, alongside a deluxe 2CD, 50-track reissue, there are limited edition art prints and T-shirts that mix and remix the artwork of Art of Noise’s No Nonsense era. Plus – coming to this store soon – further artefacts including setlists and 7" vinyls from the new Dudley·Jeczalik·Langan live reboot.

The 2CD deluxe package features newly-remastered audio plus 22 unreleased recordings taken from the original master tapes, single versions and a multitude of mixes – some available on CD for the first time. Collaborations include Paul McCartney (Spies Like Us) and Duane Eddy’s Spies and Lost Innocence which complete the group’s trilogy of work with the Twang-master that began with the Grammy Award-winning Peter Gunn. Singles include Legacy and the Grammy-nominated, Tom Hanks- and Dan Aykroyd-sampling Dragnet.

ANNE DUDLEY:

“In No Sense? Nonsense! is quite a complex album. It’s sophisticated, and musically quite varied and clever. It didn’t lend itself to having any singles from it (Dragnet was a bit of a diversion) but there are some great tracks on it. Ode to Don Jose is lovely. At that time, we were meeting new people, doing adverts and films and things. There was lots of new input. These adverts generated other new tracks. They would evolve and we’d agree they were good ideas. And we’d ask each other what would happen if we did this, this and this? So that kept everything evolving.

JJ JECZALIK:

“My favourite track on In No Sense? Nonsense!? I would have to say A Day at the Races. I just love the groove on that. It was pretty much recorded live to half-inch tape. It’s tremendous. The rhythm of that looping, galloping thing…. I always just loved that. Along with Instruments of Darkness, it defined our use of, dare I say, abstruse sounds or colors used to create rhythm. We took that as an approach, as a principle for that track. Opus for Four works very well, too, for completely different reasons. But it was still that same thing, you have a rhythmic device and a series of different sounds all together. But with A Day at the Races, I remember first hearing that echo and I was amazed. It’s a tremendous track.

“Originally released in the late summer of 1987, In No Sense? Nonsense! is an album of juxtapositions. Art of Noise wasn’t a group anymore, it had become a duo: Gary Langan had exited stage left after In Visible Silence leaving Anne Dudley and JJ Jeczalik at the helm. More than just two musicians with different styles, they juxtaposed two completely different approaches to music making.

An array of American collaborators – from Arthur Baker to The Fat Boys via Duane Eddy – were juxtaposed against the quintessentially English, the Ely Cathedral choir and the sound of the InterCity 125. Cutting-edge technology – the Akai S900 and the Fairlight Series III – was juxtaposed against classical and piano pieces.

And an album that originally included just one single was juxtaposed against a string of tracks for Hollywood feature films: Dragnet (which won Art of Noise a second Grammy nomination), Spies Like Us (with Paul McCartney), Earth Girls are Easy (for Julian Temple), Silence Like Glass and Disorderlies.

Yet Art of Noise somehow managed to deliver their most cohesive, flowing work: 70 minutes of segued, sequenced harmony. Despite all these juxtapositions or, perhaps, because of them?”
