Friends, I would like to ask for your support in the creation of my new record, ‘Stay Human’. I have written ten new songs and I require pledges of support to enable me to finance the recording, manufacture and distribution of the release. The album title and its theme is inspired by Vittorio Arrigoni, an Italian peace activist working in the Gaza strip who was abducted and murdered in April. Arrigoni’s message was for people to stay human even in the midst of great suffering and provocation; it was the title of his 2010 book about his experiences in Gaza. He said “despite everything, there must always be humanity within us. We have to bring it to others.” Arrigoni was a true peacemaker and his execution at the hands of militant extremists is a terrible tragedy. I would like to dedicate the record to Vittorio Arrigoni and I hope that, as well as raising awareness of his legacy, it will help to continue to spread his message of peace and justice for all peoples.
This amazing website also gives artists the opportunity to pledge money to charities they support. All of the profits from the production and sale of ‘Stay Human’ will go to the Greenbelt Arts festival. Greenbelt is much more than a charity organisation, it is a living community. I have been attending the festival every August bank holiday weekend since 2003. Last year I was priviledged to perform at the festival for the first time on a bill shared with Gil Scott-Heron, Beverley Knight and Courtney Pine. This year’s line-up includes Billy Bragg, Mavis Staples, Kate Rusby and Duke Special. Greenbelt doesn’t only showcase great bands, however, it also runs an unbelievably varied programme of arts, comedy, debate, talks and discussions. Greenbelt is a Christian charity but one that would challenge most people’s expectations of what a Christian organisation is, in that it is open-minded, non-judgemental and un-dogmatic. There is a strong emphasis on social justice at Greenbelt and organisations such as the Church Urban Fund, the Amos Trust and Christian Aid are committed partners. Last year notable speakers included Clare Short, Peter Tatchell, Roger McGough and Robin Ince.
What I especially like about Greenbelt, however, and why I am motivated to support it through the release of this record, is that I believe it catalyses action in individuals and groups. The festival is a place where people committed to creativity and social justice meet and exchange ideas, where individuals are inspired to undertake new projects and where they can explore what it really means to stay human. Greenbelt relies on fundraisers to survive, however, which is where we come in.
I would love you to become involved in this project with me. Your pledges will go directly to covering the costs of recording and releasing the album. Any excess funds we raise and all the profits from sales of ‘Stay Human’ will go directly to Greenbelt. You will be the first to receive the digital download of the album and, in addition, you will have the opportunity to receive further goodies and exclusives for Pledgers such as in-progress demos, downloadable tracks, and behind-the-scenes videos and pics.
The songs on ‘Stay Human’ have mostly been written in the past six weeks and I am very happy with them. The melodies have mainly come from dreams. I’ve done a lot of waking up at three in the morning and tip-toeing downstairs to get my guitar so I can record them on my iPhone before they disappear. I’ve not forced the songwriting on this record at all. I deliberately tried not to write any more songs after I released ‘The Parousia’ last summer. Now they are coming through again, often as a subconscious response, it seems, to reading Arrigoni’s book.
I hope that together we can create something inspirational that will benefit a really good cause and help to keep alive the message and spirit of Vittorio Arrigoni.
