Brian Wilson Vs Elvis Costello

Original artwork by two of the biggest names in music - inspired by The Beatles

In 1966, while on lockdown in the Tokyo Hilton, The Beatles created ‘Images of a Woman’, the only known painting they ever made together. Born out of sheer boredom, the artwork now lives on as a unique visual expression by four of the most creative men in the world.

50 years later, Brian Wilson and Elvis Costello joined a host of other world famous bands and solo artists to take part in ART IN A CORNER. The project gave them the opportunity to follow in The Beatles’ footsteps to create paintings using materials similar to those used by the Fab Four in Japan. An amazing array of artwork was produced, with the paintings going on tour around the UK in 2016, before being sold in support of the national charities Children & the Arts and Youth Music.

Via Pledge Music, ART IN A CORNER is now launching a series of mini-campaigns to bring you prints and posters showcasing the best artwork from the project. Going toe-to-toe here are the legends Brian Wilson and Elvis Costello. Fans of these two superstars can pick their favourite and choose a striking memento to hang at home. Proceeds from the campaigns will help support the work of the two charities, meaning you get an amazing, limited edition artwork, as well as the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes with knowing your purchase is doing some good.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

‘Images of Paint Sounds’ (2016) by Brian Wilson & Band, with special guests Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin

Made on the UK-leg of the 2016 ‘Pet Sounds’ 50th Anniversary World Tour. All eleven members of the tour band contributed to the painting. The composition includes references to Pet Sounds’ animal themed cover art. Wilson’s contributions include most of the content in the bottom right corner. Jardine’s contributions include the television depicted in the bottom left corner. Chaplin is largely responsible for the content in the top right corner.

‘L’image reflechie de la beaute et la bête’ (The reflected image of beauty and the beast) (2016) by Eamonn Singer (aka Elvis Costello)

The painting was made by Costello in Vancouver in 2016. A self-portrait, the painting depicts Costello and his wife, the Jazz star Diana Krall. Costello has returned to the nom de guerre Eamonn Singer, an alias he adopted in the sleeve notes of his 1986 album ‘Blood and Chocolate’, crediting himself for creating the cover art.

Both paintings are the same size as ‘Images of a Woman’ and were made using materials chosen to match those used by The Beatles in 1966.

Special thanks to Sir Paul McCartney for endorsing ART IN A CORNER and Ringo Starr for his support.
