After three studio albums with The Army, and its various incarnations, I’ve begun work on a solo album with a few close friends. The album will be called Gallows Etiquette, and will be my first LP released on vinyl & CD. I spent much of last year writing the songs that would make up this album. It is the first for me that was entirely written on the piano, and thus feels quite different in its approach melodically and structurally. I had to learn a new way to dance…I might be an awkward dancer you guys, but when I commit, I commit. All this to say, it’s felt kinda brand new this time around.
Lyrically, the album focuses on coming to an understanding of my place in America, something with which I find myself increasingly struggling to define. The good and bad parts: the wonderful luck of it all, the guilt and gratefulness, the reckless ambition, and the responsibility or lack thereof. These songs are my experience in it, my travels in it, my joys and failures with it, and my sick way of making sense of it all. Some of the characters struggle, and some surely don’t give a fuck. And maybe I am both of them or forever somewhere in between. Oh and there are some “love” songs too.
I would like all of you who have been with me for the long run, and you new folks as well, to be involved in the process of making this album. Even if it is just spreading the word, that is what has always helped make my records possible. I am producing the album with my good friends Charles Koltak (Judah Johnson) and Rodrigo Palma (Judah Johnson/Saves The Day). We’ve begun work at Queensize Studios in Indianapolis, IN with Tyler Watkins of Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s engineering. We’ve had some amazing guests join us thus far: Vess Ruhtenberg, Dave Palmer, Jonathon Edwards, Mike Racky, Rob Collazo, Casey Tennis, Hubert Glover, Chris Fry, and Nathan Swanson.
I’ve teamed up with PledgeMusic to help complete funding for the record. As you may know it’s quite an expensive process to independently record, mix, master, duplicate, and release a record, especially if you intend to press it on vinyl. You all know this; it’s because of you that my last album Is A Beast was released. It’s important to me to be able to share this record with you and have you closer to the process. That being said, you may pledge for anything from a signed CD or copy of the album on vinyl, to a private house concert or poetry manuscript. I’ve got a few items from past records as well. I hope you’ll write me about other items/experiences that you’d be interested in seeing made available. An official release date for the record is not set at this point (most likely early 2013), but I will keep you updated on all developments as we continue to work on it. If you pledge for anything more than the digital download, you’ll get a digital copy of the album sent to your inbox when it’s ready.
I’ll be posting frequent updates on the site that you may check out once you’ve pledged. It’s an opportunity to get some behind the scenes tenderness, and probably see me make an ass of myself along the way. In addition, a % of the funds raised will be going to support the charity, Rock For Kids, which provides instruments and music education to under-served Chicago public school children.
Finally, courtesy of United Record Pressing, anyone who pledges or has already pledged $50 or more to this project will receive a free vinyl test pressing of Gallows Etiquette. Quantity is ltd., and one per person. Only 15 test pressings remain. Thanks!
I hope you’ll join me on this new album, and if you’re inclined, feel free to spread the word to your peoples. Thank you for believing (in) me.
