It’s been five years since my last record, so I’m super excited to put the finishing touches on these songs — and I’d love for you to play a part in this album’s release!
A little bit about the music:
Surrender, the way your priest or yogi might preach about it, is not a virtue I’ve often brought to my music-making. As collaborative as some of my previous albums have been, I’ve always kept a close eye (and at least a gentle hand) on every aspect of the creative process. But control gets old after a while. You tire of your own tricks and limitations.
So after a series of big events of both the painful and beautiful variety, I knew I needed to find a musical method that mirrored some of the chaos and (on the better days) surrender that was happening in my life.
Not to sound too ‘self-help’ about it, but what I really needed was a musical “trust-fall" of sorts.
So I wrote myself a kind of musical manifesto. What I needed was:
1) to arrange and record an album quickly, as a true collaboration, in an environment where we could all eat, sleep, work, play, and laugh together;
2) to work with amazing players who would nurture my songs, while somehow making the music their own at the same time;
3) to track the music live, the way people used to make records;
4) and to be entirely uncertain of the outcome.
So me, Arthur Parker (bass), Rob Stroup (engineer/producer), Naomi Hooley (vocals), Anders Bergstrom (drums), Bob Dunham (electric guitar), and Paul Brainard (pedal steel) — we went to a friend’s house on the Oregon coast and did just that.
It was a super fun few days, and I’m thrilled that this new method yielded my best music yet. The resulting album, THE GREAT MAKE BELIEVER, is almost completed. And in keeping with the collaborative spirit of the recording sessions, I’d love for you to be a part of the album release too.
How? Well, lots of ways. Here’s just a few:

One of the funnest parts of finishing an album is deciding on the song order. That means testing the track listing while driving around and blasting the music! If you live in Southern Maine, I’ll come pick you up and we can listen to all the songs on the “The Great Make Believer” to figure out the best flow. If you live elsewhere, come take a trip to Maine! If you live within 200 miles of either Portland (Oregon or Maine), I’ll play an intimate acoustic concert for your friends, family, or co-workers — hosted at your house or workplace.
Be the very first person to listen to the finished album with me, as soon as it comes back from mastering (the process where the mixes are made all nice and sparkly and punchy). If you live in Southern Maine, I’ll come to your house and listen on your best stereo. If you live elsewhere, come take a trip to Maine! Travel expenses not included.
I’ll play an acoustic concert for your friends, family, or co-workers — hosted at your house or office. If you can put me up for the night (I don’t snore), I’ll fly there and rock your living room.
The highest honor of them all You’ll appear in the album liner notes and on the back of the album with your new title: Executive Producer!
