For a large chunk of my time with PiL we were the most dangerous band on the planet – no one knew what we were going to do next – (least of all us) – it was special and crazy and awesome as fuck.

I’m so very pleased I didn’t write this twelve years ago.
In the ensuing decade or so, as I nibble around the edges of 60, I might suggest that I’ve grown up a bit and I’m pleased with the idea that this might have a tone I’ll be more proud of.

If there is one thing that has changed over that time it has been my understanding that different people really do see things differently – hence the title Memories. I do very much care about the sum of the parts and the parts that make up the sum. This isn’t my book in the same way that PiL back then wasn’t just Johns’. It was all of ours. And as much as I might prefer to not be called a twat by Keith Levene – his – or anyone else’s exclusion from this book seems incorrect. There is more to be learned from seeing other people’s points of view than by slamming the door. So, I’ve been careful to talk to a lot of people that were around us.
You might call this the companion book to the first part of The Public Image Is Rotten documentary. My memories are intense and when that fails, I have my diaries!
This is a journey for me too – I’ve already experienced a few things that have surprised me, stretched myself in ways that I am proud of and I’m excited to continue this journey of discovery and documentation with you.

A word about the format. I struck upon this: a serialized incremental date related release with Pledge, to date-stamp some particular events and memories, release some posts to the public, let people throw in some of their own memories, keep some special stuff private and at the end of it, jam it all into a nice big format fucking trainspotter book. My photos are really awesome, I’d like to think I have an eye, but really I was just there and everyone was cool with me taking 35mm slides.

I hope that this bag of stuff will be as exciting for you to see and feel, as it will be for me to share and then, really, put to bed. The burden of all of this shit has sometimes felt like a time bomb – just waiting to be destroyed by a laundry room fire or dissolved by burst water pipe indifference. Sometimes I’ve felt ridiculous to have the tiny ticket from a Boston Redsox game in 1980 still – w t f – with a few transatlantic coast to coast moves – that’s either enormously incredible – or totally sad. I’ve already felt an outreach of love – for me a little yes, but for this very special time period of Public Image Limited – and what it meant to all of us. It was fucking awesome – lets go motherfuckers!

1979 to 1985 covers a large amount of what many consider the heyday of Public Image Limited.

My time included The Metal Box (my audition) , John Peel, Old Grey Whistle Test, Paris Au Printemps (my first gig) , the first US Tour, American Bandstand, my first solo single as Brian Brain, Jah Wobbles Betrayal album, getting fired from PiL, then contributing standout tracks to The Flowers Of Romance with Nick Launay, another Brian Brain US tour and 16 stitches in the head, a broken nose and jaw, recuperation then a move to NYC, re-joining PiL, working on Commercial Zone, problems, Japan, the Holiday Inn version of the band, This Is What You Want This Is What You Get (and our highest charting single This Is Not A Love Song) leaving NYC and the move to Los Angeles with John (where he still lives to this day.) new auditions, a version of the band with a lot of potential but, finally, after a last trip to Japan and our first to Australia, I had to leave.

This isn’t just my story, its as many voices as I can squeeze into this book along with all of the memorabilia and amazing photographs I can find. My archives are extensive, I can’t believe I still have it all (and much that you cant see or hear). It was an amazing time, we were the most dangerous band on the planet.

Everything in the book without the pictures! Martin reads from the book to create a terrific audio companion or stand alone piece, with way more stumbles and repetition thats in the edited book – may also use audio extracts of some of the many interviews conducted for the book. The ideal accompaniment for driving through the forest in a Japanese car !

I love it when many reasons come together to create an irresistible object. Greta Brinkman is such a super talent, bassist (with Pigface and Moby to name just two) but also an awesome person and handy with making reclaimed wood frames. I asked her to make a few frames for the passes – so I’m offering just a few of them as a special bundle. Each is different and makes for a lovely piece to put on the wall….an original piece of the metal box tape in a frame made by Greta for a book written by me ! yes !

Bundle includes:
2 pass collection mounted in 8.5″ × 6.25″ Reclaimed wood handmade frame By Greta Brinkman. includes original piece of Pil tape and one reproduction from Japan. The tour-pass format also contains wording of provenance signed and numbered – an essential addition to any serious collection. Signed physical copy of, Memories – My Five Years In And Out Of Public Image LTD.

Post punk as fuck! You get the permissions to use with the pack!

Beats will be recorded to tape in my own studio ( to Albinis 1/2” 8 track) and in larger (more mics) format through Duality SSL.

Live Drum Session

I play (and you record) drums at your location of choice.

If you want me to do this then I hope it’s because you like the twist of ‘Blue Water’ or ‘Tie Me To The Length Of That’ or a ‘Poptones’ feel of some mad triplet ‘Under The House’ thjng – and of course, I will annihilate that stuff – if you want me to do Todd Rundgren or Rush cover songs, I might take 4 of the 5 hours learning the intricate changes of a drum pattern that you shouldn’t have me do and in fact I probably wont….so there is that. (this is at my discretion)
If you are interested in my brain – then that’s what will make this fucking epic.

The fine print……

Only 3 of these available and, you also need to pay travel and accommodations if necessary (I might be close to you at some point but can’t guarantee it)

Other questions: if you have me play on tracks and you release them do I get royalties? No- you are paying me a session fee.

You supply the kit – this worked out great with Love Tapper who had a studio set up with an awesome house kit that was ready to go when I arrived – maximizing groove time.

If I contribute awesome elements to a song do I get a co-write? No – I’m doing this for the hell of it because I can – if I contribute things that could be considered a co write (like being presented blank tape for NIN’s Wish) then that’s on me.
