CITY OF DREAMS – The new album from MIKELANGELO
Like many artists who have been drawn to the honeypot of Melbourne, I’ve made this place my home. Travelling the world is my business but this is the place where I return to shelter from the storm, it’s where I feel safe and where I feel loved.
The city has become part of me. From the bright and darkened corners of the streets and laneways songs have come calling. They have come in abundance and I have been recording these pearls in a crossection of Melbourne studios – The Imaginarium, Bakehouse, Soundpark, Headgap, Creepy Hollow, Audrey – with some of my favourite Melbourne artists including Miles Brown, Clare St Clare, Rob Snarski, The Nymphs, Stu Thomas, Tali, Myles Mumford, Daniel and Gideon Frankel, Loki Lockwood, Justin Rudge and more.
City of Dreams is my love letter to Melbourne. Its my soundtrack to the metropolis, and it is you who will give these songs wings to travel around Melbourne, around Australia and around the world.
Anyone who knows Mikelangelo knows that I am larger than life. Like a grand mansion on a hill, I am nothing until there is someone to turn on the lights, to decorate the halls and rooms and to come to the party. My friends, you are all invited, let the champagne flow!

The pledge video was shot and edited by Kai Smythe, I’m sure you’ll agree that he did a magnificent job. He incorporated still images by Alan Moyle, Sam Martin, Dru Blumensheid, Dave Pickens and Clare St Clare. A big thank you to Kai and all the photographers, in particular Mandy Hall and Alan Moyle who also shot images for the pledge rewards. Your ample talents and generous contribution of time have made this great project even greater!
City Of Dreams is my love letter to Melbourne. I wrote these songs walking through streets, laneways and parks at different times of the day and night. I’ve worked with some of my favourite local musicians make an album that is a soundtrack to the city.

Like a latter day Sampson, we all know that’s Mikelangelo’s handsome
head of hair is the secret to his power. You too can know enter the inner
sanctum and learn the ancient secrets with your own tin of Mikelangelo
pomade to style your hair. If you need a first quiff styling lesson, this can
be arranged for an extra $50.
For the dapper dresser – there are three mid 20th century male grooming kits to choose from all brown Leather with sturdy metal zips.
I never wore this blazer as often as I expected, the reason being that it is a bit too large in the body for me. It’s a beautiful jacket made of strong, soft wool and in very good condition. I’ve matched it with a plum and red paisley shirt in the colour coded theme, both work well together and separately. An excellent choice for playing polo or golf.
In dulcet tones Mikelangelo will read you or a loved one a bedtime story or special poem of your choice in person or over the phone.
Spend an hour with Mikelangelo at Arkwright & Co, the 1940s and ’50s tea-room-inspired café on the cnr of Reid and Nicholson street. You will love this place based on a British Factory Tea Room – Join me for a chat over homemade old fashioned crumpets, a Devonshire cream tea or a fresh lamington.
Join Mikelangelo in the fruit and deli section – Let me assist you to choose a fine European cheese & a strange fruit & something marinated then join me upstairs to drink a cappuccino on the mezzanine.
Join Mikelangelo for a light and spicy dinner date at my favourite Thai restaurant Lai Thai on St Georges Road in North Fitzroy.
I bought this from a friend 15 years ago and learned to play it
At live shows with the Black Sea Gentlemen. I treated it terribly, but still it loved me. With a missing ‘tooth’ and bellows held together with gaffa tape, it’s a true rock’n’roll accordion. It comes with a nice old case too.
Your drink can be Shaken or stirred. Choose from the fine selection of traditional and exotic cocktails on offer and choose to relax with in one of the soft velvet lounges in the Deco Bar or in the venues beautiful courtyard.
Every man of merit deserves a powder blue suit in his collection. The shirt is a classic, a rare example of a beautiful deep blue long sleeve Hawaiian print. This shirt works very nicely to anchor the suit. Beware, with the wrong shirt, this suit can be too garish, but with the right shirt, the whole room will give you their attention. It’s time for you to be powder blue!
Every man has a cowboy hidden within, be it close to the surface or buried deep. Dressing up is one of the pleasures that many men deny themselves, and the more we accept this natural thrill, the happier we will be. I bought this lovely felt hat new off the shelf in a very stylish vintage shop in London. The shirt is an old favourite and sets off the genuine cowhide waistcoat well. If you wear leather shoes and eat steak, don’t be afraid to wear cowhide. This outfit will work for you when you hear the call of the wild. The black leather cowboy boots are a size 10, and were the first pair I bought after a search for many years to find the ideal boot. Ride ‘em cowboy!
This suit remained in my wardrobe for a few years before it’s time.
When I found the right shirts and boots, I realised why I had bought it,
It’s a winner! You will cut a fine figure in this handsome, inimitable number. Its time for another man to enjoy this high quality vintage delight!
I had this suit tailored for me in 2009 and it’s been a pleasure to wear on
and off stage. I won’t tell you how much it cost, but this is a steal and will
elevate you to a level of male grooming hitherto undreamt of…
Unique and cut to perfection, created by the finest purveyor of elegant and expressive tailored suiting – Antons of Melbourne. This Jacket is impeccably cut and stitched, from unique and luxurious fabric and is in excellent condition. This single-breasted Jacket will make you feel a million dollars. The Size is Large. I
I bought this guitar 14 years ago. It really came into its own
in the Tin Star. I composed Midnight Flower, No Sign Of A Pipeline,
Balkan Beach Party and many other hits and memories on this
good looking and great sounding axe. It’s done a few trips around the
world with me and has been steadfast companion.
This is the guitar I learnt to play on 25 years ago. I’ve written hundreds of songs on it, including A Formidable Marinade, Action (Is my Middle Name),
and other family favourites. They are many amazing memories etched into this beautiful old beast and we’ve travelled Australia and the world together.
