Hello Music Lovers!
We are happy to announce Noctorum’s fourth album THE AFTERLIFE to be released in November 2018. The album will be available on CD and gatefold vinyl.
Everyone knows that making and selling a record these days creates some interesting challenges, but as I look around the In Deep Music Archive, I see just how many records were made despite all the difficulties of their eras. With the advances in technology putting a studio in everyone’s computer, music has actually become easier to make and share with the public and interestingly this coincides with fewer sales and less financial backing from record labels as the internet has decimated record sales. This means that the non-commercial artists cannot build an audience with their art so easily. But even as financial backing and record contracts are a thing of the past for most of us I see that these new ways of doing things can end with a positive outcome. It really is a labour of love. Still, there’s nothing quite like making a record in a good studio with talented contributors both creative and practical. So for musicians and songwriters times have changed drastically as we are mostly no longer supported by a record label’s handsome budget – but then we are also free, we have our creativity intact and with our ingenuity and the help of those that like our music we can help make it all happen anyway.
We wrote, recorded and mixed the album at Dare’s VIP Lounge studio in Penzance, Cornwall (also home of the In Deep Music Archive) using local musicians to augment the songs where needed – mainly drummers and other more obscure instrumentalists as we found them.
The album has me singing most of the lead vocals, playing guitar and bass, Dare sings two songs (High Tide / Low Tide and Show) and has been responsible for any programming and mixing and also plays extra guitar, bass and keyboards. Olivia duets with me on the song Head On. She also plays violin, cellolin and any needed string parts as well as singing backing vocals. See track listing below.
We have invested quite heavily in the album with the costs of other musicians and technicians, studio rental, mastering, artwork, travel and accommodation. The manufacturing and promotion will be contributed to by our label Schoolkids but it’s going to take more than their small budget to get the album noticed.
To see the ways in which you can support these projects you can preorder THE AFTERLIFE through our PledgeMusic store. Other ways to contribute are available, ranging from t-shirts to record shopping sprees in your city and even recording time with Dare and I down here in Penzance.
Thanks so much in advance for your support from Marty, Dare, Olivia, all the musicians involved in the project and Schoolkids who we also thank for their support! Spread the word!
Review by Arno Sojo (Sweet Gum Tree)
“So stylish, so British. Noctorum’s long-awaited fourth offering definitely chimes, sparkles and shines. Recapturing the trademark sounds that initially made Sparks Lane and Offer The Light so attractive, Dare Mason and Marty Willson-Piper have come up with their strongest, most cohesive album yet. One of The Afterlife’s strengths lies in the homogeneity of its orchestration. The listener can’t get enough of the outstanding harpsichord / flute / trumpet / violin / female vocal arrangements. In addition to the usual array of guitars, bass, drums and keyboards these elements produce a sheer signature sound, beyond any of their previous efforts, despite the usual eclecticism.
The enticing pop flavours of the catchy Piccadilly Circus In The Rain are to die for. A Resurrected Man’s moving lyrics appropriately close side one of the album, Marty delivering one of his most poignant ballads ever in this love song to his muse. The more classic-rock vibes at the core of the record feel great too, with Marty getting the load off his chest and using a large palette of vocal styles. Dare gets to sing the lead on a couple of songs, and man does he rock! The epic Head On is the coup de grâce. As if it wasn’t enough to begin the song with a tasteful detective story vibe and instrumentation, Marty always sounding great in this vein (Noctorum fans fondly recall Ask Again), then comes the revelation of Olivia Willson-Piper’s mysterious and sexy lead vocal in what turns out to be a compelling duet. And there is so much more to cherish Head On for, its prog outro being another prowess in itself. Among the standout tracks are The Afterlife, utterly poignant and soaring magnificently (its guitar treatment luring the listener into thinking that Tony Banks is guesting on keys), The Moon Drips, a sort of horror story set to a mariachi backing track and the touching, tender and poetic In A Field Full Of Sheep, which fulfils its mission of bringing a sense of relief.
With great consistency in the writing, performance and production, it’s clear that Noctorum have lovingly crafted and matured each song on this beauty of a record, intensely generous.”
Noctorum is a collaboration between guitarist/singer-songwriter Marty Willson-Piper and producer Dare Mason.
Dare and Marty grew up together on the Wirral, near Liverpool, listening to classic sixties Pop singles, Singer-Songwriters, Krautrock, Spacerock, Prog, Art Rock, New Wave, Punk, Funk, Glam Rock, Heavy Rock, Reggae and Soul – probably the reason for their diverse and eclectic sound. Moving to Australia in the early eighties, Marty joined The Church and then in the early nineties All About Eve, while Dare concentrated on becoming an engineer and producer, working at the renowned Townhouse Studios in London, before founding the VIP Lounge studio in Penzance, Cornwall. In the early noughties Dare and Marty formed Noctorum and in 2003 they released their first album on Heyday Records, Sparks Lane. Before their second album Marty joined The Saints and in 2006 Heyday released Offer The Light. The album was re-released as a digipak in 2010 on Second Motion Records. Their third album Honey Mink Forever was released on Heyday Records in 2011. In 2015 Marty joined Anekdoten. Soon after Dare and Marty began writing for their fourth album The Afterlife which will be released on Schoolkids Records in the USA in the autumn of 2018 on CD and gatefold vinyl.
As a House Engineer at the world famous Townhouse Studios in London, Dare worked with the likes of Prince, Paul McCartney, Boy George, Tina Turner, Ravi Shankar, Soul II Soul and many others. Becoming a freelance producer/engineer in 1991, he produced albums for The Grid, The Church, Placebo and AC Acoustics, working in London, New York, Sydney and Stockholm, before finally settling in Cornwall and setting up the VIP Lounge in 2001. Nowadays, Dare is mainly known as a mixing engineer, having mixed recordings by Tommy Tokyo (Warners, Norway), Brix Smith (ex The Fall), Cinerama (Cooking Vinyl) as well as many local acts (Thirteen Senses, Hollie Rogers etc). Dare is also a composer and songwriter in his own right. An accomplished guitarist, singer and dabbler in keyboards, he usually ends up contributing musically to the artists he produces.
Marty Willson-Piper is a British guitarist & singer-songwriter who has been writing and performing with many bands and artists all over the world for the past 35+ years. He is best known as a long-time member of the Australian psychedelic rock band The Church. Willson-Piper contributed to all of the Church’s studio releases until 2013 and was a touring member from 1980 to 2013. He joined All About Eve in the 90s, releasing two studio albums and several live albums and is currently touring with Swedish Prog legends Anekdoten. Willson-Piper has maintained a steady solo output since the mid-1980s, releasing six solo studio albums and three live solo albums to date and has song co-writes with many artists, including Grace Slick, Aimee Mann, Susannah Hoffs, Linda Perry and many more.
