Rhubarb Bomb is a fanzine based in Wakefield, created in 2007. To celebrate it’s 5th birthday we are releasing a compilation album and a book charting our own history and that of the bands we’ve supported and championed.
‘The City Consumes Us’ album features exclusive tracks from amazing Wakefield bands past and present including: The Cribs, The Research, Skint & Demoralised, Middleman, The Spills, Runaround Kids, Piskie Sits, Pylon, Lapels, The Old House, Mi Mye, St Gregory Orange, Protectors, Imp, The Whippets, One Day, After School…. and The Passing Fancy, plus more TBC.
The physical version of this record will be housed inside a 200 page paperback book. Re-edited old articles chart the story of these bands whilst new interviews put 2007 – 2012 in much greater context. The rise of Rhubarb Bomb from a drunken idea to creating a sellout festival (Long Division), its place within the constantly advancing and changing Indie landscape and its promotion of DIY ideals are just some of the ideas explored.
Also includes memorable interviews with such Indie inspirations as: Mark E Smith (The Fall), Malcolm Middleton (Arab Strap) Luke Haines (The Auteurs), Emma Pollock (The Delgados), Eddie Argos (Art Brut), David Gedge (The Wedding Present) Emmy The Great and The Cribs.
The book is full of exclusive pictures and individually designed articles, giving it a fresh, interesting appearance in keeping with the Zine itself.
‘The City Consumes Us’ is not simply a document of a couple of bands from Wakefield. It is about wider Indie ideals, supporting Art, creating communities, making friends and the difficulties, but ultimate pleasures, of making something positive happen in a small city.
