Because it’s our 17th album (go ahead; count.) Because we recorded 17 songs, 4 of which will be on our Outtakes EP, available only through this page.
For the past 23 years, we Nields have made albums the way farmers grow crops. We start with songs (seeds), and nurture them along with arrangements, other musicians (sun, water, dirt), make a recording, sell it (this part is kind of important), and then with sales from the last record, we pay for the next . The money from the last album sits in a silo for the next batch of new, green little songs. And so we went.
But given our growing families, the rise of online streaming, and the rising price of gas, touring in the teens is way different from touring in the 90s. We need your help--our own little Community Supported Agriculture model-- to get this album out, get the word out, create an art budget, pay for mastering and duplication, pay for our band to join us for some targeted shows, pay for promotion and distribution. We want to make videos. We want to move the way we did when we still had the boys. We want to see you at the shows. And so we are asking you to buy the album now, and you will get it by Feb. 2, 2015.
As soon as you pledge, you get the single “Love, Love, Love,” and you will become a part of this Pledge Community here, where we will regularly update you and give you access to weekly video/audio/visual treats. Think of us as you and you will become a part of this Pledge Community here, where we will regularly update you and give you access to weekly video/audio/visual treats. Think of us as your friendly neighborhood CSA: pay upfront for your yummy veggies, and we will produce for you. And, as you can see below, we have all sorts of extra treats for extra money, just like at your farm you can opt for a regular or a large share, or maybe get a fruit share or a meat share to go along with your veggies.
We are delighted to partner with Pledge so that you can bring our album to the world. In this brave new era, you are the record label. You are our employers. I know everyone always says the same thing on these Pledge pages; that this is their best record ever, blah blah blah. But you know what? This is our best record ever.
Thank you in advance for supporting us. We have asked you for help before, and we are so grateful that, like the character in “Give Me a Clean Heart,” you always come through. And we’ve said this too many times to numerate: you are the best fans in the world. Thank you for being ours. See you at the shows.
About the album:
And these songs were written over the course of a year: “River” was written in May 2013, and “Delilah” was written at the end of one of Nerissa’s writing retreats in early July 2014, right before we hit the studio. They are a tight group of songs, typically diverse in true Nieldsian fashion. There’s our version of “Joe Hill,” which recounts our dreams about Pete Seeger right after his passing, and his direction to us (which I believe we’ve followed, having made this record). There’s “Love Love Love,” a kind of joyful, full-bodied update of “Easy People” with some B6 organ and banjo thrown in for good measure. There’s “Princess” our axis of awesome power chord examination of gender in the 20Teens “Once I skated on a clear lake/Angels, circles and figure 8s/A ballet: the naked trees my audience.” There are rocking, feminist and O Brotherish hymns for churches without walls: “Treasure in the Rock,” “Turn It Around,” “Delilah” and “River” (the last featuring Tracy Grammer’s gorgeous violin). There is “Witness,” a tight and flawless N&K co-write about singleness. There’s “Dave Hayes the Weather Guy,” a tribute to some of our local heroes. There’s “You Don’t Have that Kind of Time,” a feminist celebration of loving the body you have and not the body you think someone else wishes you had.
And then there are the two songs where we look back at our long career and take it in. Wasn’t That a Time is Nerissa’s love song to Katryna (Eliza) as well as you guys, us looking back and seeing that hill, seeing that even though some might say we are over it, we are really at the summit, breathless at the view.
As for Normandies, this is the Nields’ “Hey Jude,” “Day in the Life,” “Tangled Up in Blue,” “Stairway to Heaven.” It’s a long look back, through a wider lens than that of “Wasn’t That a Time.” It’s our anthem. Just listen.
Special guests: Dar Williams, Stephen Kellogg, Tracy Grammer, Jennifer Kimball, Catie Curtis, Rachael Sage, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Dave Hayes, Monte Belmonte and more!
