“From a personal point of view, the early to mid-90s was something of a golden period: so much great music to discover, so many transformational gigs & shows big & small. Bivouac are woven into the fabric of that time for me, a part of the bigger picture and one that still occupies a piece of my heart. I can still recall driving from London to Gloucester to seem the band one Tuesday night & also I believe seeing them open the Foo Fighters’ first UK show at ULU. Happy, wider-eyed times, thanks for the memories.” – Paul Rees

“In late 1992, I’d been earning a living writing about music for almost five years. I’d met some amazing people, seen some incredible bands and heard a lot of great records. I probably thought things were pretty peachy. Then Steve Lamacq got me a show with a new radio station called Xfm, which was trying to get a broadcasting licence. With two hours of airtime to fill four nights a week, I began listening to even more music. I don’t have many clear memories of that period, but I still recall being sent the first Bivouac 12-inch EP, the one with ABC and Me, Ted & Charles. A test-pressing with a sleeve that wasn’t glued together. I played it night after night. I may possibly have done the John Peel thing of playing the whole EP. I very probably did the me thing of getting carried away and elbowing the needle across the record while it was playing. In my defence, I thought Bivouac sounded like Miracle Legion’s baby brother band, only sadder and better. They blew my mind and mashed my heart. I absolutely bloody loved them.

Bivouac went on to make other records and I played them too. But that first one was always my favourite. I still have it: the test-pressing with the unfinished sleeve. I’m off to play it now. And once it’s done, I’m going to play it again." – Keith Cameron

From the band:
It’s Stewart Lee’s fault!

Sometime in 2016 Stewart Lee wrote a Guardian Column and mentioned bivouac, it was a typically terse and brief mention. The article was read by the good people who organise the ‘gigantic’ festival in Manchester – this is a popular fest in Manchester one of which is a bivs fan (Peely called us ‘the bivs’ so its allowed) the other a friend, the usual music biz combination of nepotism and serendipity. They asked us if we would play gigantic 2016…

What shall we wear?was Antony’s response to the question of “shall we do some gigs after not playing for 20odd years?!” that was pretty much the spirit of the few shows we played thereafter, we made a racket (with earplugs this time) celebrated the folly of youth, grown men cried, people travelled from Scandinavia, Europe and America. It was very humbling…We planned to play a few more.

Peel Sessions

We all grew up listening to Peel, It’s a cliche I know but I listened under the bedclothes on an am radio to his show in the early 80’s the music he played me then still defines a large percentage of my musical taste.

To be part of that legacy is still really humbling, we are very proud to release the Peel sessions…

I remember him playing us as I walked across the Reading show grounds in 9?! puffing my chest out! He kindly supplied us and our label mates AC Acoustics with beer from the VIP tent cos we were skint, we did awful radio interviews with him and he had us do three sessions. It really was a dream come true (barf!)…
