National Parks Centennial Artist Rebekah Rolland's Solo Debut

Two summers ago, I traveled from Tucson, Arizona to Beatrice, Nebraska as an artist-in-residence for the National Parks Service Centennial. I, along with my husband/musical partner, loaded a pile of camping gear into a little truck and prepared for several days of songwriting in the wide open plains and skies of first ever American homestead (now Homestead National Monument). This residency was my way of satisfying an artistic itch that I’ve had for as long as I can remember.

As a little girl, I was a period-lit/film junkie, devouring books by L.M. Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott, Willa Cather, Harper Lee, and the Brontë Sisters. I lived in these worlds as much as possible, spending countless hours with my sister, walking in the wooded area by our house, reading, writing, pretending, and creating. We were fascinated by people and events of the past, and we liked the creative challenge of reimagining their lives. We also grew up singing old-time and bluegrass ballads, and, similarly, those old mountain tunes were a fascinating window into another time and place.

Fast-forward a couple of decades: I’ve studied English Literature at the University of Arizona; I’ve taught high school English; I’ve traveled coast-to-coast playing music with the band, Run Boy Run; I’ve continued to read and to write and to record. I have been on this trajectory for most of my life because I have been touched and shaped by art in its various forms, and I believe in it. I believe in the power of visual art, music, dance, and literature to inspire, inform, build community, prompt action, nurture compassion and understanding, and serve as an enduring voice for those who have been or are without one.

The release of this record falls at a significant time, with recent budget cuts to the National Park Service, the arts, and education, and issues surrounding immigration, racial and gender inequality, and the environment becoming increasingly prevalent and pressing. My hope is that this music prompts reflection on the extraordinary and multifaceted history of homesteading, its effect on our national identity, and the ways in which we might continue to learn from it as we confront these issues individually and collectively.

I’ve partnered with PledgeMusic to offer the opportunity to preorder the album. In addition, I’ve included some nature- and National-Park-related items to urge you at the onset of the summer season to #FindYourPark. Upon release of the record, all online profits via BandCamp will go to Homestead National Monument, and the album art and music will be made available to guests at the monument for years to come.

We need our National Parks to preserve these histories. We need the artists, the teachers, the community leaders to motivate us to be better, more compassionate citizens of the world. I hope that this music contributes to this effort in some capacity, and I hope that it brings you joy, comfort, excitement, motivation, and curiosity.

Thank you for participating and taking the time to get to know me and the project. I am honored and excited to share this music and these stories that have meant so much to me.
